Safety & Security

Protecting our students, staff, and schools—every day.

Our Commitment to Safety

The safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority at Marion ISD. We are committed to maintaining a safe, supportive learning environment through proactive planning, clear procedures, and strong partnerships with families and our community.

This page provides important information about the programs and protocols in place across the district. We encourage families to review these resources and stay informed.

Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Marion ISD follows the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), a nationally recognized system that provides clear, consistent actions for students and staff during emergency situations.

The Five SRP Actions:

  • HOLD – In your classroom or area
  • SECURE – Get inside. Lock outside doors
  • LOCKDOWN – Locks, lights, out of sight
  • EVACUATE – Move to a safe location
  • SHELTER – Take protective action (weather or hazard)

Each action includes specific instructions for both students and staff. These procedures are practiced regularly through drills to ensure everyone is prepared and confident in responding to different situations.

Student Safety Training & Drills

Students participate in age-appropriate safety training and drills throughout the school year. These exercises are designed to build awareness, confidence, and readiness in a supportive environment.

We encourage parents to talk with their students about these procedures and reinforce the importance of staying calm, following directions, and being aware of their surroundings.

Bad Weather Procedures

Throughout the year, Marion ISD may experience weather conditions such as heavy rain, flooding, ice, snow, or high winds that can impact road conditions and safe travel. In preparation for these situations, we want to share how decisions will be made and communicated.

When weather conditions create unsafe travel for students and staff, the District may implement a delayed start, early release, or full-day school closure. Each decision is made carefully using information from local law enforcement, emergency management, and weather authorities.

If a schedule change or closure is necessary, families will be notified through ParentSquare via phone, email, and text. Notifications will include important details such as adjusted start times, release times, or when students should return to campus. Information will also be shared on the Marion ISD website and official social media channels.

For situations that develop overnight or over an extended period of time, announcements may also be shared through local media outlets, including KENS 5, KMOL 4, KSAT 12, KWED 1580 AM, and the Seguin Gazette.

Please know that all decisions are made with student and staff safety as the top priority. Weather conditions can change quickly, and the District will always err on the side of caution.

For outdoor activities, Marion ISD uses a weather monitoring system to track lightning. In accordance with UIL regulations, any lightning strike within a 10-mile radius will result in a delay, and all participants and spectators will be directed to seek shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last detected strike. Administration will continue to monitor conditions and determine whether activities will resume or be postponed based on safety.

Partnering with Families

Safety is a shared responsibility. Marion ISD values strong communication with families and encourages parents and guardians to stay informed, ask questions, and report concerns.

If you have questions about safety procedures, please contact your child’s campus administrator.
